This project consisted of adding approximately 11,000 SF of warehouse space to the Union Tribune's existing distribution facility. Tilt-up wall construction was utilized for the exterior shell while inserting new four hour rated firewalls to separate the fire hazard of bulk paper storage. Building to dock height proved to be a challenge, because of limited site space. The use of fill dirt for backfill and grading was not an option. The answer was a product called Geofoam, a Styrofoam product used in the construction of Highways for the last 20 years; the whole expansion slab was poured on top of 32 inches of the Geofoam product with excellent results. Every newspaper printed in San Diego today starts here in this distribution facility as blank rolls of paper weighing over 3 tons.
